Il Nardo è una pianta per profumi della famiglia della Valeriana che cresce nell’Himalaya, in Cina, in India e in Nepal.

Il rizoma del Nardo può essere schiacciato e distillato in un olio essenziale ambrato intensamente aromatico, molto denso, detto olio di Nardo, usato come profumo (che però ha un odore aromatico, medicinale) ed è uno delle 11 erbe utilizzate come incenso nel Tempio di Gerusalemme. L’uso più antico che conosciamo proviene da anforette, trovate nelle tombe egizie. Questo unguento era usato dalle popolazioni israelitiche al tempo di Mosè. Era considerato un lusso nell’antico Egitto, nel vicino oriente e a Roma, dove fu il principale ingrediente dei profumi nardium.

Spikenard is a perfume plant of the Valerian family that grows in the Himalayas, China, India and Nepal.

The spikenard rhizome can be crushed and distilled into an intensely aromatic, very thick amber essential oil, called spikenard oil, used as a perfume (which however has an aromatic, medicinal smell) and is one of the 11 herbs used as incense in the Temple of Jerusalem. The oldest use we know comes from amphorae, found in Egyptian tombs. This ointment was used by the Israelites at the time of Moses. It was considered a luxury in ancient Egypt, the Near East and Rome, where it was the main ingredient in nardium perfumes.
