Il suo nome deriva dall’arabo murr che significa amaro; la fragranza è dolceamara e intensa.

Proviene dai bassopiani a sudest dell’ Etiopia.

Impiegata dalla medicina tradizionale d’Oriente e d’Occidente, il suo uso è citato da fonti millenarie. Gli egizi la usavano per l’imbalsamazione, per profumi e cosmetici; i cinesi per artrite, piaghe, spasmi; in Occidente per problemi respiratori e per affezioni del cavo orale. Oggi è usata per dentifrici e colluttori, per inalazioni balsamiche in caso di tosse e raffreddore, in profumeria come repellente per zanzare.

Employed by traditional medicine of the East and the West, its use is mentioned by millenary sources. The Egyptians used it for embalming, perfumes, and cosmetics; the Chinese for arthritis, sores, and spasms; in the West for respiratory problems and for affections of the oral cavity. Today it is used for toothpaste and mouthwashes, for balsamic inhalations in case of coughs and colds, and in perfumery as a mosquito repellent.
